You don't necessarily have to hand Apple $1,999 all at once.
Apple currently lists several ways to save or spread out the cost of the iPhone Duo, including Apple Trade In, Apple Card Monthly Installments, Apple Upgrade, and carrier promotions available through Apple.
Apple Trade In
Apple Trade In is currently one of the simplest ways to lower the iPhone Duo price without tying yourself to years of carrier bill credits.
Apple says customers trading in an iPhone 13 or newer can receive between $175 and $885 in instant credit toward an iPhone Duo. Your actual offer depends on the model, configuration, and condition of the phone you're trading in.
At the top end, an $885 trade-in would effectively bring the $1,999 starting price down to $1,114 before taxes and any other applicable costs.

Pay in Full
Of course, you can also buy the iPhone Duo outright.
There's no financing agreement or long-term device payment to worry about, and buying an unlocked phone gives you more freedom to change plans later.
If you already have an Apple Card, purchases made directly from Apple are also eligible for 3% Daily Cash, subject to Apple's terms.
On a $1,999 purchase, 3% works out to about $60 in Daily Cash. It's not exactly making the Duo cheap, but $60 is $60.
Apple Card Monthly Installments
Apple also offers 0% APR over 24 months through Apple Card Monthly Installments for eligible purchases.
At the iPhone Duo's $1,999 starting price, Apple lists the base model at approximately $83.29 per month for 24 months before taxes and any applicable trade-in credit.
If you have a phone to trade in, that credit can reduce the amount you're financing.
Apple Upgrade
Apple also introduced Apple Upgrade, a leasing program provided through Klarna.
For the iPhone Duo, Apple says 12- and 24-month lease options are available, with the Duo starting at approximately $57.99 per month for 24 months.
There's an important distinction here: this is a lease, not traditional financing.
At the end of your term, you can upgrade to something new, but you'll need to return the original device in good working condition. You can also upgrade early by paying the remaining lease payments and applicable taxes.

This is where things get a little more complicated.
The major carriers have announced that the iPhone Duo is coming, but the biggest promotional offers currently being advertised are still primarily tied to the iPhone 18 Pro lineup rather than clearly published Duo-specific discounts.
That could change as we get closer to the Duo's October 16 pre-order date.
For context, Apple's current carrier-offers page advertises trade-in promotions of up to $1,200 through AT&T, $1,200 through T-Mobile, and $1,020 through Verizon on eligible iPhones.
The catch? Carrier discounts like these typically come as monthly bill credits and require an eligible plan, trade-in, new line, upgrade, or some combination of the above.
In other words, don't assume a "$1,200 off" iPhone deal automatically means you'll get $1,200 off the Duo on October 16. Check the Duo-specific terms once pre-orders actually begin.
AT&T
AT&T's current iPhone 18 Pro promotion offers up to $1,200 in credits over 36 months with an eligible trade-in and qualifying wireless plan.
That's a useful example of how an AT&T iPhone Duo deal could be structured, but it isn't confirmation that the exact same terms will apply to the Duo.
