After years of rumors, Apple finally has a foldable iPhone.
The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable, combining a compact 5.4-inch outer screen with a massive 7.6-inch display when you open it. It also brings an A20 Pro chip, a new version of iOS 27 built around folding and multitasking, a 48MP dual-camera system, Apple Pencil support, and a few completely new ways to use an iPhone.
It starts at $1,999, with preorders opening October 16 and availability beginning October 23.
There's a lot that's different here. So, let's break down everything you need to know about Apple's first foldable iPhone.
iPhone Duo at a Glance
What Is the iPhone Duo?
The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone.
Instead of using one traditional display, the Duo has two.
When it's closed, you get a 5.4-inch outer display that works like a regular iPhone screen. Apple says it provides about 90% of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro while keeping the phone compact enough for one-handed use.
Open the Duo and you get a 7.6-inch folding display, which Apple says is 50% larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
That means you can use the Duo like a relatively compact iPhone for everyday tasks, then unfold it when you want more room for videos, games, reading, multitasking, or work.
And yes, it really does fold right down the middle.
iPhone Duo Price and Release Date
The iPhone Duo isn't cheap.
Here are the U.S. prices by storage:
Preorders begin October 16, 2026, with the Duo officially available beginning October 23 in the U.S. and more than 70 other countries and regions.
If you're staring at that $1,999 starting price wondering whether a folding screen could possibly be worth it, we already tackled that question in our full iPhone Duo: Is Apple's $1,999 Foldable Actually Worth It? guide.

iPhone Duo Design: How Does Apple's Foldable Work?
The Duo folds inward like a book.
Apple uses a precision hinge made from more than 100 components that supports the center of the display when the phone is opened. Magnets help securely close the two halves when you're finished using the inner screen.
Apple also managed to make the Duo remarkably thin when unfolded.
Open, the Duo measures just 0.21 inches (5.2 mm) thick. Fold it closed and the depth increases to 0.44 inches (11.3 mm).
It weighs 8.96 ounces (254 grams).
The body is made from Grade 5 titanium and comes in two finishes:
- Star White
- Night Sky
One notable difference from Apple's other recent iPhones is authentication. Instead of Face ID, the Duo uses Touch ID built into the side button, allowing you to unlock it whether the device is folded or open. You can also unlock it using an Apple Watch.
Two Displays: 5.4 Inches Outside, 7.6 Inches Inside
The displays are obviously the main event.
The 5.4-Inch Outer Display
Closed, you get a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display.
It supports:
- ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz
- Always-On display
- HDR
- True Tone
- 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness
- Dynamic Island
Apple designed the outer screen to function like a regular iPhone, so you don't have to unfold the Duo every time you want to answer a text or check a notification.
The 7.6-Inch Inner Display
Open the phone and you get a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding OLED display.
That's the largest display Apple has ever put on an iPhone.
It also supports ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On display, HDR, True Tone, and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
Apple added a nano-texture finish to the inner screen to reduce glare and reflections while also making the crease less noticeable.
There's even a FaceTime camera hidden beneath the inner display when you're not using it, leaving the screen uninterrupted.
And later this year, you'll be able to use a USB-C Apple Pencil on either display for writing, sketching, and marking up documents.
iOS 27 Was Reworked for the Duo
Putting regular iOS on a giant folding display would be a bit of a missed opportunity.
So Apple adapted iOS 27 specifically for the Duo.
When the phone is unfolded, you can see two Home Screen pages at once, with Today View positioned alongside them. Controls, navigation elements, and the Dock have also been repositioned to take advantage of the extra space.
Even Dynamic Island changes orientation to work with the Duo's different screen layouts.
But the biggest change is multitasking.
Split View Brings Two Apps Side by Side
For the first time on an iPhone, Split View lets you run two apps side by side.
You can:
- Open two different apps at once
- Open two windows of the same app
- Quickly swap between apps
- Save frequently used app pairs
- Use Siri AI while keeping other content visible
That means you could have Safari open next to Messages, compare two webpages at once, reference an email while working in another app, or keep travel details open alongside Maps.
Apps including Netflix, Zoom, and Slack are also already being adapted to take advantage of the folding display.
A20 Pro Brings Pro Performance to the Duo
Inside the Duo is Apple's A20 Pro chip, the same chip family used in the iPhone 18 Pro models.
It includes a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and Dual 16-core Neural Engine.
Apple says A20 Pro delivers up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, while a new thermal system helps the Duo maintain performance during demanding tasks.
That's particularly important on a phone designed for multitasking.
Apple connected the A20 Pro directly to a custom vapor chamber to dissipate heat, while a new display engine handles the inner and outer screens.
The Duo also includes Apple's C2 cellular modem and N1 wireless networking chip, with support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
iPhone Duo Cameras
The iPhone Duo uses a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system.
On the back, you get:
48MP Fusion Main
The Main camera can capture photos at up to 48MP and defaults to 24MP for a balance between image quality and file size.
It also provides an optical-quality 2x Telephoto, giving you a closer view without requiring a separate telephoto camera.
48MP Fusion Ultra Wide
The 48MP Ultra Wide gives you a 120-degree field of view and supports macro photography.
But some of the Duo's most interesting camera features aren't about megapixels at all.
They're possible because the phone has two displays.
New Camera Tricks Only the Duo Can Do
Apple is taking advantage of the outer display in some pretty clever ways.
Take Rear-Camera Selfies
Instead of relying on a front camera, you can use the higher-resolution rear cameras for selfies while using the outer display to see your framing.
Duo Preview
When you're taking someone's picture, Duo Preview can show the person a live preview on the outer screen.
They can see exactly how they're framed before you press the shutter.
No more taking 14 pictures because someone's eyes were closed. Hopefully.
Smart Take
Smart Take uses on-device AI to analyze what's happening in front of the camera and automatically capture a photo when everyone is posing.
That could be especially useful for group photos where the photographer wants to actually be in the picture.
Kid Cue
Trying to get a kid to look at the camera?
Kid Cue can play Peanuts animations on the outer display to grab their attention while you take the photo.
Apple apparently decided the answer was Snoopy.
Fair enough.
Duo FaceTime
Duo FaceTime lets someone standing with you use the outer display during a FaceTime call, rather than everyone squeezing around one screen.
You can also prop the Duo partially open on a surface for hands-free FaceTime calls, photos, or video.
iPhone Duo Video Features
The Duo can record 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 120 fps using its 48MP Fusion Main camera.
It also supports:
- Cinematic effects after capture
- Audio Mix
- 4K Dolby Vision time-lapse
- Slow motion
- Spatial Audio recording
- Wind noise reduction
And because the phone can support itself when partially folded, you can use it almost like its own mini tripod.
That's particularly useful for time-lapses, video calls, group photos, or filming yourself without needing another accessory.
iPhone Duo Battery Life
Fitting a battery into a foldable phone creates an obvious problem: there's a hinge running straight through the middle.
Apple's solution is to use two built-in batteries, one on each side of the Duo.
Apple rates the phone for:
The Duo can also fast-charge to around 50% in about 20 minutes using a 60W-capable or higher power adapter and USB-C cable.
MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging are supported at up to 25W.
How Durable Is the iPhone Duo?
Durability is probably one of the biggest questions people have about Apple's first foldable.
Apple has done quite a bit to reinforce it.
The Duo uses a Grade 5 titanium body, while its hinge contains more than 100 components designed to support the center of the folding display.
The outer display uses Ceramic Shield 2, while Ceramic Shield also protects the back.
Inside, Apple uses additional support ribs and a titanium plate to reinforce the structure.
The folding display itself includes a scratch-resistant coating and a custom nano-textured polymer cover layer. High-strength glass sits above and below the folding display panel, while flexible adhesives allow those layers to move as the phone opens and closes.
The Duo also carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.
Of course, specs can only tell us so much.
Because this is Apple's first foldable and it hasn't reached customers yet, we'll have to wait for long-term real-world use before we know how the hinge and folding display hold up after months or years of daily opening and closing.
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI on the Duo
The Duo supports Apple's latest Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features.
And the larger screen creates some interesting ways to use them.
For example, you can keep content visible on one side of the screen while having a conversation with Siri AI on the other.
The Duo also includes Siri Camera mode, which allows Siri to see what your camera sees and use that visual information to answer questions or take actions.
The A20 Pro's Dual 16-core Neural Engine is designed to handle more AI processing directly on the device.
The iPhone Duo Is eSIM-Only
There is no physical SIM card slot on the iPhone Duo.
The Duo uses Dual eSIM, allowing two eSIMs to be active at once, and Apple says it can store eight or more eSIMs.
That applies to the Duo worldwide, rather than only U.S. models.
If you're switching to the Duo from a phone with a physical SIM, you'll need to make sure your carrier supports eSIM.
iPhone Duo Accessories
Apple is also launching accessories designed specifically around the folding form factor.
iPhone Duo Case
Apple's two-piece Duo Case wraps around both sides of the device while still allowing it to fold.
It costs $79 and comes in Sand and Navy Blue.
iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand
The Duo Folio adds an integrated kickstand that lets you position the phone at different angles for reading, watching content, or FaceTime.
It costs $129 and comes in Navy Blue and Taupe.
Both accessories work with MagSafe and Qi2 charging.
How Does the iPhone Duo Compare to the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max?
The biggest difference isn't performance. It's the form factor.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max give you Apple's traditional flagship experience, while the Duo trades that traditional design for a compact outer screen and a much larger folding inner display.
That makes the Duo particularly interesting for multitasking, entertainment, reading, gaming, and productivity.
But it also starts at $1,999.

The iPhone Duo Is a Very Different Kind of iPhone
The iPhone Duo isn't just another annual iPhone update.
It's Apple's first attempt at fundamentally changing what an iPhone can look like and how you can use one.
Closed, it's a compact iPhone.
Open it, and you get a 7.6-inch workspace with two-app multitasking, Apple Pencil support, new camera experiences, and enough screen space to start blurring the line between an iPhone and an iPad.
Whether all of that is worth $1,999 is another question entirely.
We've broken that down in our full guide to whether the iPhone Duo is actually worth $1,999.
