I swear I'm not one of those people who upgrades every year. But after two years with my iPhone 16 Pro, I decided it was finally time to upgrade to the iPhone 18 Pro.

Some of the biggest differences include:
- Longer battery life: The iPhone 18 Pro is rated for longer battery life than the 16 Pro, and this has been one of the biggest differences I've noticed in everyday use.
- A20 Pro chip: Apple’s newer chip brings improved performance and efficiency compared to the A18 Pro in the iPhone 16 Pro.
- Upgraded cameras: The 18 Pro adds a variable-aperture Main camera, a 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera, and an upgraded 18MP front camera.
- Dual Capture video: You can record with the front and rear cameras at the same time, something the iPhone 16 Pro can't do.

Of course, a list of specs doesn't tell you which upgrades you'll actually notice. After my first week with the iPhone 18 Pro, a few differences have mattered a lot more than the others.
iPhone 18 Pro vs. 16 Pro Battery Life: A Noticeable Upgrade
This is the upgrade I feel most. My routine hasn't changed: I charge to 100% overnight and head into the day the same way I always have. The difference shows up in the afternoon.
With my iPhone 16 Pro, by 3 p.m. I'd usually be sitting somewhere around 60–70%. Not bad, but enough that I'd start thinking about a charger if I had plans that evening.
With the iPhone 18 Pro, I checked at 4:19 p.m. on a normal day and it was at 84%!
That's a 20 to 30 point swing by mid-afternoon on a typical day. It's nice not having to think about charging, knowing I've still got plenty ahead of me in the late afternoon and evening that needs battery. Like finishing my New York Times puzzles to keep my streaks alive!
Now obviously my 16 Pro was two years old, and batteries naturally lose capacity over time. I checked the battery settings and it showed that it was first used in September 2024 and now at 88% maximum capacity (still listed as "Normal"). So part of this jump is just going from an older battery to a brand-new one. Even so, a 12% drop in capacity doesn't fully explain a 20 to 30 point difference by mid-afternoon, so it feels like more than just a fresh battery.
Apple's own battery ratings point in the same direction. The iPhone 16 Pro was rated for up to 27 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro is rated for up to 36 hours. My experience obviously isn't a controlled battery test, but after a week, the improvement has been impossible to miss.
iPhone 18 Pro vs. 16 Pro Design: Aluminum vs. Titanium
Not everything is an upgrade for me. I went with Glacier on the iPhone 18 Pro, and it's a nice color. It looks good, and it’s a nice change from the silver, white, and natural titanium finishes that I’ve selected in the past.
But there's something about the titanium finish on the 16 Pro that I liked better than the aluminum. It felt a little more premium in the hand and had a more refined look. The aluminum is perfectly fine, but I noticed the difference the moment I picked it up.
A note to Apple: please bring back that lovely, glossy, mirror-like stainless steel finish on the sides e.g. iPhone 14 Pro. Yes, I keep my phone in a case, but on the rare occasion I popped it off, it was a joy to look at. It just looked elevated!
It's not a dealbreaker, and plenty of people will prefer the new finish. If you loved the titanium feel, though, just know it's different.
iPhone 18 Pro vs. 16 Pro Camera: Where I Noticed the Difference
The camera is where the 18 Pro really earns its "Pro" name. Everyday shots look great, but the improvement I noticed most is macro. iPhone 18 Pro Dual Capture Video Is One of My Favorite Upgrades
Honestly, this feature was one of the main reasons I made the jump. It started with the iPhone 17 Pro, but you can record video with the rear camera while the front camera captures your reaction in a small picture-in-picture window.
It sounds like a small thing, but it changes how you capture moments. Instead of choosing between filming what's happening or filming yourself reacting to it, you get both in one clip. It's perfect for things like kids’ games, unboxing videos (which my 12 year old daughter loves to do), and amazing travel moments like this one from our vacation.
Should You Upgrade From the iPhone 16 Pro?
If you're coming from the iPhone 16 Pro, the upgrade comes down to what you value. The battery life improvement is real and you'll feel it every day. The camera, especially macro, is a clear step up, and the Dual Capture mode is a genuinely fun new way to shoot.
The one trade-off for me is the design. If you loved the titanium finish, the aluminum body might feel like a small step sideways.
For me, the battery and camera made it worth it. If those matter to you too, the iPhone 18 Pro is an easy recommendation. If your 16 Pro is still holding a charge well and you're happy with your photos, you can comfortably wait another year.
